Ardex P9 Water-Based Primer
The primer for smooth, dense and non-porous surfaces. Water based, dry in about 20 minutes.
ARDEX P 9 Single Part Primer is a water-based, low VOC, solvent free primer. It improves the bond of selected ARDEX tile adhesives, floor levellers and undertile membranes to smooth, dense and non-porous substrates. Brush or roll it on, wait about 20 minutes, keep going. Grey. 1L and 4L pails.
Where to use it
- Existing glazed tiles before re-tiling (not shower floors or permanently immersed areas)
- Jointing compound over plasterboard, internal particleboard, plywood and sheet timber under tile adhesives
- Concrete, renders, screeds, masonry, lightweight blocks, AAC and fibre cement sheet
- Concrete, masonry and compressed fibre cement under all ARDEX water-based waterproofing membranes
- Internal and external, walls and floors
Why waterproofers buy it
- Water based, low VOC and solvent free
- Ready to use. Stir, then brush or long nap roller
- Dry in approximately 20 minutes at 23°C and 50% RH
- Improves adhesion to smooth, dense and non-porous substrates
- Dilute 1:1 with water under floor levellers and on highly absorbent substrates (not for ARDEX K 60 and K 65)
- 1L and 4L pails
- ARDEX 10 year product guarantee
Coverage
6 to 10 m² per litre. Coverage varies with the porosity of the surface and how you put it on.
Not for
ARDEX solvent-based membranes, negative hydrostatic pressure, steel trowelled concrete under floor levellers, shower floors or permanently immersed areas over existing glazed tiles, or damp surfaces with water residue.
Drying time at 23°C and 50% RH.

Technical overview
Key applications
- Priming before selected ARDEX tile adhesives
- Priming before selected ARDEX floor levelling compounds
- Priming before selected ARDEX undertile waterproofing membranes in non fully immersed conditions
- Internal and external wall and floor applications
- Priming smooth, dense and non-porous substrates
- Priming jointing compound over plasterboard before tiling
- Priming existing glazed tiles before tiling
- Priming autoclaved aerated concrete and lightweight concrete blocks
Surface suitability
- Concrete, renders and screeds (not steel trowelled finish concrete where a floor leveller is being applied)
- Masonry and lightweight concrete blocks
- Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC)
- Medium density fibre-cement sheet and compressed fibre-cement sheet
- Jointing compound over plasterboard (tile adhesives)
- Internal particleboard, plywood and sheet timber (ARDEX K 60 and ARDEX K 65 only under floor levellers)
- Existing glazed tiles (not suitable for shower floors or permanently immersed conditions; de-glaze before priming under floor levellers)
- Concrete, masonry and compressed fibre-cement sheets under ARDEX water-based waterproofing membranes
Not compatible with ARDEX solvent-based membranes. Over existing glazed tiles it is not suitable for shower floors or permanently immersed conditions. Not suitable for steel trowelled finish concrete where a floor leveller is being applied. Do not use in negative hydrostatic pressure applications. All surfaces must be dry before application, with no water residue or permanent dampness. Do not place excess primer back into the original packaging. Store away from direct sunlight and replace the lid tightly after use. Hazardous chemical: may cause cancer, may cause an allergic skin reaction, causes eye irritation and may cause respiratory irritation. Do not breathe mist, vapours or spray and wear protective gloves, clothing, eye and face protection.
