Sizing is the main decision. Match the balloon to the internal diameter of the pipe or waste you're sealing - tap any size to select it.
Block the floor waste and fill the recess to check the membrane before tiling.

A flood test balloon temporarily seals the drain outlet so the test area can be filled with water and monitored. That's how you find leaks, pinholes, weak spots or drain-junction issues before tiles or finishes cover the waterproofing.
Push the deflated balloon down past the waste outlet.
Inflate until it's firm against the pipe wall and the drain is sealed.
Clip a rope to the top hook so it can't disappear down the drain.
Fill the area and watch the water level over the test period.
A small membrane defect is far easier to fix before tiles, screed or finishes go down. Once the area is completed, the same leak can mean callbacks, disputes, demolition and rework.

Sealed a 100mm floor waste, filled the shower and left it overnight. Picked up a pinhole right at the drain junction before tiling - saved me a callback. The rope hook is a must.
