Technical overview

Gripset Xpress SP is a solvent free primer developed with adhesion enhancing properties for non-porous, dense and smooth substrates, and it is also suitable for porous surfaces. It is designed for use on both wall and floor surfaces and achieves high adhesion without the need for etching or using solvents. It is intended for the application of Gripset self-adhesive sheet and liquid membrane systems, to enable the bond to difficult substrates such as metals, glazed tiles, natural stone and rigid plastics. Drying time is 30 mins at 23C and 50% RH. The Gripset data sheet cites no Australian Standard and no accredited test certificate; the published adhesion figures carry no test method or report number, and the only standard quoted is ISO 13741-1 for VOC content. System compliance is carried by the Gripset membrane applied over it.

Key applications

  • Priming non-porous, dense and smooth substrates for Gripset self-adhesive sheet and liquid membrane systems
  • Priming metals including galvanised iron, zincalume, aluminium, stainless steel, copper and colorbond sheeting
  • Priming existing ceramic tiles, vitrified tiles and natural stone
  • Priming precast and tilt up concrete and glass reinforced concrete
  • Priming glazed surfaces and rigid plastic surfaces
  • Priming hardwood and dense timber surfaces
  • Priming James Hardie Scyon Secura external and internal flooring
  • Priming polymer mortars, synthetic mortars and smooth self-levelling compounds
  • Wall and floor surfaces, internal and external
  • Commercial, industrial and residential applications
  • General surfaces where absorbing primers are not suitable or where adhesion enhancement is required

Surface suitability

  • Metals including galvanised iron, zincalume, aluminium, stainless steel, copper, brass treated steel and colorbond sheeting
  • Precast and tilt up concrete, glass reinforced concrete
  • Hardwood and dense timber surfaces
  • Existing ceramic tiles, vitrified tiles and natural stone
  • Brickwork (clay and concrete)
  • Compressed cement sheeting, plasterboard surfaces
  • James Hardie Scyon Secura external/internal flooring
  • Polymer mortars, synthetic mortars, smooth self-levelling compounds
  • Marine plywood and timber sheet surfaces
  • Glazed surfaces
  • Rigid plastic surfaces
  • General surfaces where absorbing primers are not suitable or where adhesion enhancement is required
  • All substrates must be structurally sound, smooth, stable, dry and clean

Not to be used as primer for areas with rising moisture or negative hydrostatic pressure. Not to be used in immersed applications. All substrates must be structurally sound, smooth, stable, dry and clean, with rough surfaces and voids evened or filled first and all brick and block surfaces pointed flush. All surfaces are to be free of sharp protruding objects, loose material, de-bonded coatings, curing membranes and agents, release agents, wax residues, foreign particles, laitance, algae and moss, grime, oils, animal fats or grease remains. Contact Gripset Technical Services for details on spray application. Adhesion of the products to be used should be tested over a typical area of the prepared surface before the application starts.

Frequently asked questions

View all FAQs
  • Where do I use Xpress SP instead of GP?
    Application

Use Xpress SP on dense, non-porous substrates – existing tiles, vitrified surfaces, natural stone, metals, hardwood and dense timber – where standard primers will not bond.

  • What substrates is it certified for?
    Compatibility

Galvanised iron, zincalume, aluminium, stainless steel, copper, brass, treated steel, Colorbond, precast/tilt-up concrete, hardwood/dense timber, existing ceramic and vitrified tiles, natural stone.

  • How long until I can apply the membrane?
    Cure & Dry Time

Touch dry in 30 minutes at 23°C / 50% RH. Apply the chosen Gripset liquid or self-adhesive membrane once the primer is fully dry.

  • Do I need to dilute it?
    Application

No – apply neat by brush, roller or spray in a single even coat.

  • How much does a litre cover?
    Coverage & Coats

Typical coverage is approximately 8–10 m² per litre depending on substrate porosity. Refer to the TDS for the specific substrate.

  • Is it safe indoors?
    Safety

Yes – solvent free formulation makes it suitable for interior wet areas with normal ventilation.

Why trade professionals choose Gripset

Gripset supplies waterproofing membranes, primers, tapes, bond breakers and detailing components to the Australian trade, and the range is used widely on residential and commercial projects. It is built around complete systems, so the primer, the membrane and the detailing accessories are designed to work together on bathrooms, balconies, planter boxes and below-ground areas. We stock Gripset for tilers, waterproofers and builders who would rather buy the whole build-up from one place than mix components across brands.
