Bat Trims

It is a de-aerating roller for freshly poured self-levelling compounds, screeds and epoxy floor coatings. Rolling the wet surface breaks surface tension so entrapped air can escape and the material flows out evenly instead of curing with pinholes and craters. Most floor layers work it across the pour in overlapping passes while the material is still live.

Self-levelling compound will flow on its own, but it will not reliably release the air introduced during mixing and pouring. A spike roller is the standard way to get that air out and help the compound key to the primed substrate, which is why compound manufacturers generally recommend one. Skipping it is a common reason a poured floor comes up blistered or hollow sounding. Work within the compound's own working window as set out in its technical data sheet.

Spike rollers are used across both cementitious levelling compounds and thicker epoxy and resin floor coatings, because the job is the same in each case: release entrapped air before the material goes off. Clean the roller thoroughly between different material types so cured residue does not drag through the next pour.

It is a washing and finishing sponge for cleaning down tiles and dressing grout joints once the grout has firmed enough to touch. Used with clean water and wrung out properly, it lifts haze and shapes the joint without dragging grout back out of it. Tilers commonly keep one sponge for cementitious grout and a separate one for epoxy grout work, since epoxy residue ruins a sponge for anything else.

Wash both in clean water as soon as you finish, before compound, epoxy or grout begins to cure on them. Cured material on the spikes changes how the roller behaves and is difficult to remove, and a sponge left loaded with grout hardens and becomes useless. Dry them out of direct sun and store the roller so the spikes are not sitting under weight.
