Fosroc

Fosroc is a construction chemicals brand supplied to the Australian trade, with a waterproofing range covering membranes, coatings and joint sealing products. The part of that range we stock is the joint and below-grade side: Parchem Supercast Hydrofoil, Parchem Hydrotite Waterstop and Parchem Leakmaster LV-Z. These are products builders and waterproofers reach for on structural work such as basements, retaining walls and construction joints, rather than general wet-area touch-ups.

A waterstop is a strip built into a concrete construction joint or cold joint so water cannot track through the joint once the structure is in service. They are standard practice on basements, lift pits, retaining walls, tanks and anywhere concrete is holding back ground water. Below-grade work like this is normally driven by the engineer's design, while the Australian standards more often quoted on site, such as AS 3740 for internal wet areas and AS 4654 for external above-ground work, cover different situations. Supercast Hydrofoil is a profile waterstop that sits in the joint and has concrete poured around it, so it needs to be planned in at the formwork stage. Hydrotite is a hydrophilic strip that swells on contact with water and is fixed to the face of a cured pour before the next one goes in, which makes it useful where a cast-in waterstop was not an option. The right choice comes down to your joint detail and the sequence of pours, so work from the drawing rather than substituting one for the other.

Leakmaster LV-Z is a cartridge-applied adhesive sealant used as a companion product to hydrophilic waterstop work. Its job is to bed the strip firmly to the concrete so it stays in position and stays in full contact with the substrate while the next pour goes in, and to take up minor surface irregularities underneath it. It is not a standalone membrane, so most crews order it at the same time as their Hydrotite rather than as a separate trip.

Preparation and continuity matter more than anything else with joint waterproofing. The concrete face needs to be sound, clean and free of loose material, and the waterstop has to run continuously with properly formed joins at corners, laps and terminations, because a gap anywhere in the run undoes the rest of it.
