Master Finish

The pointed blade is made for detail work rather than broad flat finishing. Waterproofers, tilers and renderers use it to push mortar or patching compound into corners, joints and around penetrations where a square trowel cannot reach cleanly. It is also handy for cutting and buttering small amounts of material straight out of the bucket.

A coving trowel has a curved profile designed to form and shape internal angles, so the junction between floor and wall finishes as a smooth radius instead of a hard corner. That matters in wet areas, where a formed cove lets a membrane turn the corner without bridging an open gap. The Master Finish 202 Coving Trowel is the tool in this range built for that job.

Stainless steel resists rust and staining, which suits work with light coloured renders, toppings and cement based compounds where carbon steel can leave marks in the finish. Most wet area jobs call for two shapes at minimum: something pointed for detail and patching around drains, pipes and corners, and something curved for forming internal coves before the membrane goes down. Wash the blade down before material has a chance to go off on it, because cured mortar is far harder to remove and can pit the steel. Dry the tool instead of leaving it sitting wet in a bucket or a toolbox, especially with carbon steel. Store trowels so the blade is not bearing weight or knocking against other tools, which keeps the edge and the set of the blade true.

New steel trowels can feel stiff and leave lines until the corners soften slightly with use, which is normal for hand finishing tools. Working a new trowel on rougher preparation coats first, rather than straight onto a finish coat, helps take the sharpness off the edges. If a blade has been dropped or bent, check it against a flat surface before using it on a finish, because a distorted blade will chase marks through the work.
