Swellable PU joint sealant. Expands over 70% when water reaches it and blocks the construction joint.

ACTFLEX PROSWELL is a grey, water-swellable polyurethane paste gunned onto concrete construction joints before the pour. It cures on air moisture, then swells more than 70% when groundwater hits it, pushing against both concrete faces to form a compression seal. Because it is a paste, it fills rough concrete that a preformed strip would bridge.

Where to use it

  • Concrete construction joints and cold joints below ground
  • Bedding and edge-sealing PRESWELL HYDROPHILIC WATERSTOP on rough concrete
  • Basements, lift pits, retaining walls and blockwork walls
  • Pipe and service penetrations, precast panel and segment joints

Why waterproofers buy it

  • Expands over 70% on contact with water to form a watertight compression seal
  • Swells and relaxes through repeated wet and dry cycles without fatigue
  • Sticks to damp, uneven joint faces and stays put during the pour
  • Runs from a standard caulking gun. No special tools
  • Hand-applied concrete cover from 8 hours, large pours from 24 hours
  • 700% elongation. 600 mL sausage pack

Coverage

600 mL sausage: 6.0 m at a 10 x 10 mm bead, 3.0 m at 20 x 10 mm. Rough concrete takes more.

Not for

Waterproofing a structure on its own (it seals a joint, not a structure), continuous immersion, expansion or movement joints, standing water (the joint must be damp, not wet), running water (stop it with ACTFLEX HYDROPLUG first), or application below 5°C or above 35°C. Do not pre-soak.

All times at 25°C and 50% RH.

Expands over 70% on contact with water to form a watertight compression seal
Seals rough concrete - flows into surface irregularities a preformed strip cannot follow

Technical overview

ACTFLEX PROSWELL is a grey, elastic, water-swellable polyurethane paste applied by cartridge gun to concrete construction joints. It cures on atmospheric moisture and the hydrophilic polymer dispersed through it draws in water on contact and expands by more than 70% of its original volume. Confined within a cast joint the swelling material generates positive pressure against both concrete faces and forms a compression seal, so it blocks the joint rather than bridging it. It is a joint sealant, not a waterproofing membrane, and carries no classification under AS/NZS 4858 or AS 4654.1. No Australian Standard governs a hydrophilic swellable sealant of this type and no accredited test report is held, so all performance figures are indicative Forspec R&D design characteristics.

Key applications

  • Concrete construction joints and cold joints, below ground
  • Sealing and bedding PRESWELL HYDROPHILIC WATERSTOP on rough or uneven concrete
  • Basements, lift pits and below-ground structures
  • Retaining walls and blockwork walls
  • Pipe and service penetrations through concrete
  • Precast panel joints and segment joints
  • Emergency and rapid-turnaround joint sealing where an early concrete pour is required
  • Joints exposed to fluctuating moisture levels and repeated wet and dry cycling

Surface suitability

  • Concrete construction joints (structurally sound and clean, damp but not wet, free of dust, dirt, oil, curing agents and release agents)
  • Rough and uneven concrete (approved and preferred, apply additional sealant to fill voids)
  • Precast and segment joints (sound, clean and free of release agents, joint geometry confirmed to suit a sealant bead)
  • Blockwork and masonry (sound, joints struck flush and made good)
  • Pipe and service penetrations (clean and sound around the full circumference)
  • Voids and honeycombing at the joint (repaired with a FORSPEC concrete repair product before sealing)
  • Non-porous surfaces (not approved without proper preparation, confirm the method with FORSPEC Technical Services)
  • Wet surfaces and standing water (not approved, the surface must be damp not wet)
  • Joints subject to active water ingress (stop the flow with ACTFLEX HYDROPLUG first, then seal)

Not a waterproofing membrane. ACTFLEX PROSWELL seals a joint, it does not waterproof a structure, and must be used in conjunction with the other waterproofing measures specified for the structure. Not suitable for continuous water immersion. Not suitable for expansion joints or designed movement joints - it seals construction and cold joints. The joint must be damp, not wet: do not apply into standing water. Not for non-porous surfaces without proper preparation. Apply only between 5C and 35C ambient, and avoid application in extreme temperatures or during heavy rain. Do not pre-soak. Protect from rain and groundwater between application and the pour, and avoid displacement during concrete placement and vibration. Where active water is entering the joint, stop the flow with ACTFLEX HYDROPLUG before sealing - swellable sealants do not stop running water. Cure proceeds at approximately 3.5 mm per 24 hours, so a deep bead takes proportionally longer to cure through and premature water contact will swell the sealant before it has cured and developed adhesion. Potable water contact requires written confirmation from FORSPEC Technical Services.
