Technical overview

ACTFLEX 989 CWP is a Class III two-part flexible cementitious modified acrylic waterproofing membrane for internal and external non-exposed applications, covering wet areas, balconies, podiums, below-grade retaining walls and the positive side of swimming pools beneath tiled finishes. It is independently certified Class III under both AS/NZS 4858:2004 (XTecGen Report 374-7) and AS 4654.1-2012 (XTecGen Report 374-5). Tiles fix directly to the cured membrane with ACTFLEX BIOSET, the membrane-to-tile system being accredited-tested to AS ISO 13007.5 under XTecGen Report 568-2, and adhesion to abraded PVC panels is certified to ASTM D4541 under Report 577-1. Certified VOC content 4 g/L. It applies to cured damp surfaces and acts as an under-tile anti-efflorescence barrier.

Key applications

  • Internal and external wet areas - bathrooms, showers, laundries, balconies, podiums, courtyards and non-exposed rooftops
  • Swimming pools, water features and water-holding structures within the approved three-coat system
  • Below-grade retaining walls and basements within approved systems
  • Under pedestal paver systems
  • Beneath screed beds in FORSPEC screed systems
  • Under-tile anti-efflorescence barrier
  • Waterproofing of abraded PVC panel systems
  • Direct-stick tiling with ACTFLEX BIOSET

Surface suitability

  • Concrete (newly poured, cured minimum 28 days, primed with ACTFLEX EP250)
  • Rendered surfaces (minimum 7 days curing, thickness-dependent)
  • Cement screeds (solid, level, void- and crack-free, wood-trowel finished, dried 48 hours to 5 days)
  • Masonry (primed with one coat of ACTFLEX EP250 within approved systems)
  • Abraded PVC panels (sanded to promote adhesion and cleaned thoroughly, no primer required)

Not a stand-alone UV-exposed membrane and not a permanent trafficable surface - it is always covered by tiles, screed, pavers or an approved finish. Never apply below 10C or above 35C, ambient or substrate, or when rain is imminent. Never dilute with water or solvent. Mechanical mixing only, never by hand. Recoat, tile, screed or cover with pavers or decking within 5 days of the final coat; beyond that, clean with mild detergent and water, dry fully and re-prepare before proceeding. Confined, poorly ventilated areas cure slowly - recoat minimum 24 hours, full cure minimum 7 days, with mechanical ventilation in tanks and basements. Water-holding structures are filled no earlier than 10 days after the final coat. Where the membrane is fully exposed to UV beneath open pedestal pavers, top-coat with ACTFLEX 101 UV at 0.6 mm DFT before pedestal installation. The membrane relies on correctly executed bond breakers, fillets and reinforcement at all junctions. Part B powder is a hazardous chemical containing portland cement - it causes serious eye damage and is suspected of causing genetic defects, so avoid all dust inhalation and skin contact.

Frequently asked questions

View all FAQs
  • What is ACTFLEX 989 CWP used for?
    Compatibility

989 CWP is a high-performance cementitious membrane for wet areas, balconies, podiums, pools, and below-grade retaining walls. Particularly suited to anti-efflorescence under-tile applications.

  • What's the cure schedule?
    Performance

989 CWP is fast-curing - foot traffic and tile-ready in 6-8 hours, full cure in 72 hours. Underground applications need 7 days, water-contact applications need 10+ days before immersion.

  • Coverage and thickness?
    Installation

Coverage is approximately 8 m² per 18kg kit at 1.2mm DFT. Two-component (polymer + powder) mixed on site. Dual hydration + polymerisation cure gives both rigidity and flexibility.

  • Standards compliance?
    Compliance

Certified to AS4858-2004 and AS4654.1:2012 - Class III. With 389% elongation and 2.31 MPa tensile strength, it meets the most demanding cementitious membrane specifications in the Forspec range.

  • How does it compare to 988 CWP?
    Performance

989 CWP is the higher-performance cementitious option - faster cure, slightly higher elongation, and slightly better tensile rating than 988. Use 989 for premium specs; 988 for general cementitious WP including high hydrostatic pressure work.
