How does the chemistry work?

MaxRest Passive converts active rust into a stable passive layer and forms a protective coating that prevents future corrosion. The water-based formula is non-toxic, low-odour, and easy to apply on site.

Clean the steel surface (abrasive blast or wire brush to bare metal). Stir the product, then apply two coats by brush or spray. Wait 2-3 hours between coats. Each coat at approximately 0.15 kg/m², total system 0.30 kg/m².

How to Use

Apply two coats by brush, air-less spray or immersion at 0.15 kg/m2 per coat, the second when the first is dry to touchRemove loose and unsound concrete around the rusting reinforcement
Remove enough concrete behind the reinforcing bars to allow space for the cleaning treatment
Clean the metal free of paints, coatings, efflorescence, loose particles, grease, oils, curing agents, form release agents, dust, gypsum plasters and organic growth
Remove rust by wire brush or needle gun until an St-2 surface preparation grade is reached
Clean the prepared surface with clean water and a damp cloth
Stir the container with a dry clean tool, or a slow speed drill at 300 to 400 rpm fitted with a disc mixer, until uniform in colour and appearance
Do not dilute or add any other material; the product is supplied ready to use
Apply the first coat by brush, air-less spray or by immersing the element, at 0.15 kg/m2 for a 50 micron dry film
Avoid staining the concrete around the reinforcement
Apply the second coat when the first is dry to touch, between 2 and 3 hours at 20C
Build to a total of 100 microns dry film over two coats at 0.30 kg/m2, adding further coats where required
Cover with structural repair mortars 3 to 4 hours after application
Where an epoxy or polyurethane coating follows instead, wait 24 hours
Allow longer at lower temperatures or higher relative humidity, which increase the curing time
Clean all mixing and application tools and equipment immediately with water after use

Technical overview

MAXREST PASSIVE is a one-component, ready to use liquid oxide converter and protective coating for steel reinforcement and other steel and iron surfaces. Applied over rust it neutralises the corrosion process, reacting with the rust and transforming the iron oxide into a stable passive coating that protects against corrosion, salts, acid and alkali attack. It is water-based, solvent-free, non-flammable and contains no volatile organic compounds. The product carries CE marking under EN 1504-7 as an active coating with corrosion inhibitors, working to Principles 11-CA / 11.1 and 11-CA / 11.2, with adhesion to steel of 4.9 MPa and corrosion protection tested to EN 15183. No NATA, CodeMark or equivalent accredited certificate is held.

Surface suitability

Steel reinforcement (loose and unsound concrete removed all round, rust removed to St-2 grade, washed with clean water and a damp cloth)

Do not apply in rain, or when rain, contact with water, condensation, dampness or dew is expected within the first 24 hours after application. Do not apply where the substrate or ambient temperature is at or below 5C, or when temperatures are expected to fall below 5C within 24 hours, and never on frozen or frost-covered surfaces. Above 35C, in low relative humidity or in windy conditions, avoid direct exposure to sunlight. Do not add water, cements, solvents, additives, aggregates or other compounds. Do not mix for a prolonged period or with a high-speed mixer, which may introduce air bubbles. Avoid staining the concrete around the reinforcement. Observe the recommended consumption per coat. Avoid direct contact with skin and eyes and use rubber gloves and safety goggles when handling and applying the product.
