Technical overview

ELASTOCOL STICK is a primer designed to enhance the adhesion of SOPREMA self-adhesive membranes on porous surfaces such as DENS GLASS GOLD and DENS DECK at temperatures above -10C. It is composed of SBS synthetic rubbers, adhesive enhancing resins and volatile solvents, and the data sheet states it is also suitable to prime non-porous surfaces such as concrete, fibre cement, metal and wood. It is brushed, rolled or sprayed at 0.3 to 0.5 l/m2 on porous surfaces and 0.1 to 0.25 l/m2 on non-porous surfaces, and dries in 15 to 60 minutes. The data sheet carries Appraisal No.1145 [2021], states that all values are nominal, and cites no Australian Standard and no accredited test report for this primer.

Key applications

  • Priming porous surfaces such as DENS GLASS GOLD and DENS DECK before SOPREMA self-adhesive membranes
  • Priming non-porous surfaces such as concrete, fibre cement, metal and wood
  • Priming at temperatures above -10C
  • Priming membranes with an HDPE surface before ALSAN FLASHING
  • Roofs
  • Foundations

Surface suitability

  • Porous surfaces such as DENS GLASS GOLD and DENS DECK (at temperatures above -10C)
  • Concrete (described by the TDS as a non-porous surface, primed at 0.1 to 0.25 l/m2)
  • Fibre cement (described by the TDS as a non-porous surface)
  • Metal (described by the TDS as a non-porous surface)
  • Wood (described by the TDS as a non-porous surface)
  • Membranes with an HDPE surface, where ALSAN FLASHING is to follow

Do not accelerate drying of ELASTOCOL STICK by heating with a torch. It must be thoroughly dry before applying the waterproofing membrane, and drying time varies with air and surface temperature and humidity. Store in a well ventilated area. Keep away from any source of heat, dampness, humidity, oxidising agents or direct sunlight. Flammable before curing. Keep away from sources of ignition. The Safety Data Sheet classifies it as a Flammable Liquid Category 2 with a flash point of -23C, Poisons Schedule S5, and very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.

Frequently asked questions

View all FAQs
  • How is Elastocol Stick applied?
    Application

Brush, roller or spray onto a clean dry substrate. Shake well before use. Allow to dry fully — never accelerate with a torch.

  • Which membranes need this primer?
    Compatibility

Required ahead of Soprema self-adhesive membranes like Colphene 3000, on porous substrates such as DENS GLASS GOLD and DENS DECK, as well as concrete, fibre cement, metal and wood.

  • What is the coverage rate?
    Coverage & Coats

    0.3 to 0.5 L/m² on porous surfaces, 0.1 to 0.25 L/m² on non-porous. One 19 L pail covers approximately 38-190 m² depending on substrate.

  • How long to dry?
    Cure & Dry Time

15 to 60 minutes depending on temperature and applied quantity. Must be thoroughly dry before applying the self-adhesive membrane.

  • What are the safety conditions?
    Storage

Contains volatile solvents — store away from heat and ignition sources. Provide ventilation during use and drying.

  • Why is the primer red?
    Performance

The red colour helps applicators visually confirm consistent coverage across the substrate before laying the membrane.

Why trade professionals choose Soprema

Soprema is a French waterproofing manufacturer whose torch applied and liquid applied systems are supplied to the Australian trade. The range stocked here covers Soprasun Plus sheet membranes for roof and balcony work, Colphene 3000 for below ground and retaining wall work, Alsan Flashing liquid detailers for junctions and penetrations, and the Elastocol Stick and AntiRock primers that go underneath them. It is a system led range, so most jobs pull a primer, a membrane and a detailing product from the same brand.
