An exposed bitumen membrane you can walk on. No screed, no tiles, no protection layer.

ACTFLEX 901 BUV is a one-component, water-based bitumen membrane for exposed roofs, terraces and decks. Most bitumen coatings must be buried. This one is made for permanent outdoor exposure. It also refurbishes old asphalt coatings and bituminous sheet membranes without stripping them out.

Where to use it

  • Exposed concrete roofs and roof slabs
  • Terraces and exposed decks, foot traffic only
  • Sloped roofs and eaves gutter lines
  • Refurbishing old asphalt coatings and bituminous sheet membranes
  • Over 4% substrate moisture, prime with two coats of ACTFLEX EP250

Why waterproofers buy it

  • 720 hours accelerated weathering with no cracking, blistering or pinholing
  • No flow at 140°C. It won't slump on a sun-loaded roof
  • Rough, non-tacky surface underfoot
  • 100% minimum elongation. Handles substrate movement and shrinkage cracking
  • One component, water based, non-flammable. Tools wash up in water
  • Recoat 8 to 48 hours. Light foot traffic 7 days after the final coat
  • 10 year Forspec product warranty

Coverage

18 kg pail: 5.1 to 6.8 m² practical (6.0 to 7.5 m² theoretical) at 2.4 to 3.0 kg/m², two coats, 1.5 mm total DFT.

Technical overview

ACTFLEX 901 BUV is a one-component, water-based waterproofing membrane built on an exposure-grade emulsion and modified emulsified bitumen system, reinforced with selected fillers and performance additives. It cures to a tough, rough-textured film that stays exposed, with no screed, tiles or protection layer, and is trafficable for pedestrian use only. Manufacturer characteristic values include 100% minimum elongation, 0.5 MPa minimum adhesion to prepared concrete, water impermeability at 0.1 MPa sustained for 30 minutes, no flow, slip or drip at 140°C ± 2°C, and no cracking, delamination, blistering, adhesion failure or pinholing after 720 hours of artificial weathering. It is applied by brush or roller in two coats at 2.4-3.0 kg/m² to a 1.5 mm total dry film thickness. Uses cover exposed concrete roofs, trafficable terraces, sloped roofs and gutter lines, refurbishment of existing asphalt coatings and bituminous sheet membranes, and termination and detailing of FORZAFLEX sheet membrane systems. It is bitumen based and not compatible with the FORSPEC polyurethane range. No accredited third-party test report to an Australian Standard is presently held; verification testing to AS 4654.1 has been programmed.

Key applications

  • Exposed concrete roofs and roof slabs
  • Trafficable terraces and walkable exposed decks - pedestrian traffic only
  • Sloped roofs and eaves gutter lines
  • Refurbishment and repair of existing asphalt waterproof coatings without removal
  • Refurbishment and repair of existing bituminous sheet waterproofing membranes without removal
  • Localised patch repair and re-coating of aged bituminous systems ahead of full replacement
  • Termination and detailing membrane for FORZAFLEX sheet membrane systems - laps, perimeter terminations, upstands, penetrations and outlets
  • Sealing and dressing of mechanically fastened and ballasted FORZAFLEX sheet edges

Surface suitability

  • Concrete (cured minimum 28 days; sound, clean, dry; wood-float or steel-trowel finish; free of laitance)
  • Cement render and screed (cured minimum 7 days; sound and non-friable)
  • Existing asphalt waterproof coatings (sound, well adhered, cleaned; loose and delaminated material removed)
  • Existing bituminous sheet membranes (sound, well adhered, cleaned; blisters cut and reinstated; laps sound)
  • FORZAFLEX sheet membranes (installed to the FORZAFLEX TDS; surface clean, dry and free of talc, dust and release agents)
  • Any approved substrate above 4% moisture (two coats of ACTFLEX EP250 moisture-suppressing primer required first)

Bitumen based and not compatible with the FORSPEC polyurethane range - never overcoat with, apply over, or detail using solvent-based or moisture-cured polyurethane products, including ACTFLEX 929 SL, ACTFLEX 929 HV, ACTFLEX 75FC and ACTFLEX MS PRO; corner junctions and detailing are carried out with FORSPEC bandage systems only. Never dilute with water or any thinner - dilution destroys film formation and voids all performance claims and warranty. Not for permanent immersion, tanks, pools, ponds or water-retaining structures. Not for negative-side hydrostatic pressure. Not for use beneath screeds, tiles or bonded finishes - this is an exposed system. Trafficable for pedestrian use only - not for vehicular traffic, wheeled loads, point loading or machinery. No slip resistance classification has been established - where a slip rating is required by the project or by AS 4586, confirm it before specifying. Do not apply over standing water, or over substrates that are damp, ponding, sanding, powdering or friable. Not approved over polyurethane or acrylic membranes or silicone-contaminated surfaces. ACTFLEX 901 BUV will not bond through a talced FORZAFLEX sheet surface - remove talc, dust and release agents first. Do not apply in windy, rainy, snowy or dusty conditions, and stop work immediately if rain begins; protect completed areas until the film has formed. Not recommended in extremely humid or poorly ventilated conditions, where film formation is compromised. Apply only between 5°C and 35°C ambient and substrate temperature. Do not attempt the full thickness in one pass - a heavy single coat skins over and traps water beneath, causing blistering. The grey-brown finish absorbs solar heat - where surface temperature is a design consideration, assess the effect on the substrate and on comfort underfoot before specifying. Protect from freezing - frozen product is not recoverable and must not be used.

Frequently asked questions

View all FAQs
  • Can I use it with ACTFLEX 929, 75FC or MS PRO?
    Compatibility

No. ACTFLEX 901 BUV is bitumen based and not compatible with the Forspec polyurethane range. Never overcoat it with, apply it over, or detail it with ACTFLEX 929 SL, 929 HV, 75FC or MS PRO. Corners and details are done with the FORSPEC bandage system only.

  • Can I put it over an old bitumen roof?
    Application

Yes, if the existing asphalt coating or bituminous sheet membrane is sound and well adhered. Clean it, cut out blisters, remove loose and delaminated material and reinstate those areas first. At 4% substrate moisture or below, no separate primer is needed on sound existing bituminous surfaces.

  • How much does an 18 kg pail cover?
    Coverage

At 2.4 to 3.0 kg/m² over two coats for 1.5 mm total DFT, an 18 kg pail covers 6.0 to 7.5 m² in theory. Allow 10 to 15% for wastage, porosity and surface profile, which gives 5.1 to 6.8 m² in practice. Open-textured concrete and aged bitumen surfaces sit at the upper end of the rate.

  • When can people walk on it?
    Curing

Light pedestrian traffic is 7 days after the final coat, at 25°C and 50% RH. It is rain resistant once hard dry, approx. 7 hours. Cool, humid or enclosed conditions take longer, so check the film is dry on site. It is for foot traffic only, not vehicles, wheeled loads or machinery.

  • Is it certified to AS 4654.1?
    Compliance

No. No accredited third-party test report to an Australian Standard is held yet, and the performance figures are manufacturer lab values. Verification testing to AS 4654.1 has been programmed. If your project needs a certified membrane, confirm the compliance pathway with Forspec Technical Services first.
