Quick-setting mortar that stops running water in 3 to 5 minutes, even under pressure.

Drizoro Maxplug is a quick-setting, cement-based hydraulic mortar that stops running water from cracks, fissures, holes and other openings in concrete and masonry. Mixed with water only, it adheres to the substrate as it sets and even sets underwater.

Where to use it

  • Sealing leaks in concrete and solid masonry
  • Basements, tunnels, foundations and sewers under hydrostatic pressure
  • Emergency repairs on concrete water pipes, including under hydrostatic pressure
  • Concave corners and working joints, filled in the shape of a cove
  • Slab to wall joints in basements, lift shafts, pools and reservoirs

Why waterproofers buy it

  • Sets in 3 to 5 minutes, speed controlled with warm or cold water
  • Non-shrink, increases in volume for a permanent seal against flowing water
  • Excellent adhesion to the substrate, no bonding bridge required
  • 40.7 MPa compressive strength at 28 days
  • CE marked to EN 998-1 as an industrial mortar for general use
  • Mixed with water only, pressed into the repair by hand
  • Overcoat with the MAXSEAL range waterproofing mortars from 30 minutes after application

Coverage

Measured by void volume, not area. One kg fills about 0.615 to 0.620 litres, approximately 1.62 kg per litre of void. Cracks need a groove at least 4cm deep and 3 to 4cm wide. Slab to wall coves need at least 3cm x 3cm. Test on site first, as consumption varies with the substrate.

Not for

Do not pour or sprinkle it in. Always press it in by hand. Do not apply below 5°C. Where ground or water contains sulphates, seawater or wastewater, use the MAXPLUG ANTISULFAT version instead. Wear rubber gloves and safety goggles, as it is an abrasive product.

Technical overview

MAXPLUG is a quick-setting cement-based hydraulic mortar that instantly stops running water from cracks, fissures, holes and other openings in concrete and masonry. It is mixed with water only, is non-shrink, increases in volume as it sets, and sets in three to five minutes with an optimum setting temperature of 18C to 20C. It sets even underwater and reaches 40.7 MPa compressive strength at 28 days. It is CE marked under EN 998-1 as an industrial mortar for rendering and plastering for general use (GP). No waterproofing membrane classification is claimed on the Technical Data Sheet. MAXPLUG is a plugging and repair mortar, and Drizoro specifies overcoating with the MAXSEAL range where a waterproof coating is required.

Key applications

  • Sealing leaks in concrete surfaces, solid masonry and other sound substrates where water flows through cracks and holes
  • Stopping running water in basements, tunnels, foundations and sewers under hydrostatic pressure
  • Emergency repairs on concrete water pipes, including pipes under hydrostatic pressure
  • Sealing concave corners and working joints, filled in the shape of a cove
  • Stopping running water at expansion joints before the joint is cut and re-formed with a flexible sealant
  • Sealing joints between concrete slab and wall in basements, lift shafts, swimming pools and reservoirs
  • Anchoring bolts and other accessories that require immediate use
  • Emergency plugging of gas leaks
  • Maintenance material for homes and industry

Surface suitability

  • Concrete (solid, firm, rough and sound, free of paint, efflorescence, loose particles, grease, release oils and dust)
  • Solid masonry (solid, firm, rough and sound, cleaned of loose or unsound material)
  • Cracks and fissures (opened to a minimum 4cm depth and 3-4cm width as a square or dovetail groove, never a V shape)
  • Concave corners and working joints (grooved at least 3cm x 3cm and filled in the shape of a cove)
  • Dry substrates (dampened with water before applying)

Do not apply the material by sprinkling or pouring, and never without manual support keeping it confined until it has completely set. Always apply by hand. Do not twist or overwork the plug. Do not mix MAXPLUG with other materials or with hardened product, and use only the recommended amount of mixing water. Always use clean and dry tools to take MAXPLUG from the packaging. Do not apply below 5C substrate and ambient temperature. Where ground or water containing sulphates, seawater or wastewater is present, the TDS directs you to the MAXPLUG ANTISULFAT version instead. Keep the repair moist for at least 30 minutes after application by spraying with water without washing it off, and do not apply curing agents. The Safety Data Sheet classifies MAXPLUG as Danger, H314 causes severe skin burns and eye damage, H317 may cause an allergic skin reaction, H335 may cause respiratory irritation. Wear protective gloves and eye protection and do not breathe the dust.

Frequently asked questions

View all FAQs
  • When do I use Maxplug?
    Compatibility

Maxplug stops actively running water leaks in cracks, holes, broken pipe penetrations, and seeping joints in concrete and masonry. Used as the emergency 'plug' before applying permanent waterproofing over the top.

  • How fast does it set?
    Performance

Maxplug sets in 3-5 minutes at 20°C. Cold water slows the reaction; warm water accelerates it. The exothermic warmth on your gloved hand tells you setting has started.

  • How is it applied?
    Installation

Dovetail or square-cut the crack 4cm deep × 3-4cm wide. Mix with 28% water by weight to a stiff putty, then press into the crack by hand and hold for ~30 seconds until setting starts. Do not pour - hand-press only.

  • Is it safe for potable water tanks?
    Compatibility

Yes. Maxplug is non-toxic and approved for potable water contact - suitable for repairing drinking water tank leaks and water-treatment infrastructure.

  • What strength does it achieve?
    Compliance

22.5 MPa compressive at 3 days, rising to 40.7 MPa at 28 days. Flexural 5.7 MPa at 7 days. Chloride-free formulation, non-corrosive to rebar.

Why trade professionals choose Drizoro

Drizoro is a Spanish manufacturer of cement based waterproofing and concrete repair products, supplied to the Australian trade through The Waterproofing Shop. The range on this site covers Maxseal Foundation and Maxseal Flex, along with repair mortars, grouts, joint products and mesh, used on concrete and masonry where water has to be held back rather than simply shed. Choosing between the rigid and the flexible grade is the key decision, and it comes down to the substrate, the direction of the water and how much movement the structure is likely to see.
