Technical overview

Gripset BRW PFN is a self-adhesive butyl rubber sheet membrane for high performance waterproofing over floor surfaces in internal and external areas. A high tack butyl rubber backing and front fabric lamination give outstanding waterproof properties and resistance to vibration, movement and flexing, and support the direct application of toppings and tiled finishes. It is cold lay applied with no torching or heat welding, over primed surfaces, with a minimum 50mm overlap at all sheet joins. The TDS records a Class II membrane classification and a PASS against both AS4858 and AS 4654.1, with tensile strength to AS 4654.1 Appendix A and elongation to AS1145.3, but cites no accredited test report number, so all values are published as manufacturer test data.

Key applications

  • Internal wet areas, bathrooms, laundries and tiled areas
  • External wet areas, balconies, decks, podiums and terraces
  • Anti-fracture system over cracked concrete and floor substrates
  • Multi-layered high performance system with Gripset BRW-HD
  • Commercial, industrial and residential applications

Surface suitability

  • Concrete (allowed to cure for at least 28 days, primed with Gripset GP Primer at 1litre/8-10m2)
  • Screed and cement render (allowed to cure for at least 7 days, primed)
  • Compressed fibre cement sheeting (primed)
  • Timber sheeting and structural plywood (primed)
  • Most metals including galvanised iron, zincalume, stainless steel, copper and aluminium (priming generally not required when suitably prepared, sound and clean)
  • Glazed surfaces (priming generally not required when suitably prepared, sound and clean)
  • Marble, granite and ceramics
  • Soft and rigid plastics, PVC and DPC films (priming generally not required when suitably prepared, sound and clean)
  • Existing epoxy coatings
  • Non porous non absorbent surfaces (primed with Gripset OP Primer at 1 litre per 12m2)
  • Green or damp surfaces (primed with Gripset Xpress H20 Primer Plus at 1 litre per 6m2, or Gripset E60 at 1 litre per 3m2 per coat with the sheet installed within 72 hours of the dried film)

Suitable for floor and horizontal surfaces only. Not to be used over vertical surfaces to support tiles or other finishes. Do not apply when surface or ambient temperatures are below 5C or above 30C. Not to be used as an exposed membrane finish, it must be finished over. Not to be used as a trafficable surface. Not to be used over expansion joints. Not compatible with solvent based finishes applied over. When tiling directly over BRW PFN, polymer modified cement based adhesives must be used. Hazardous according to the criteria of Safe Work Australia GHS 7: may cause an allergic skin reaction and causes serious eye irritation. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and eye/face protection.

Frequently asked questions

View all FAQs
  • How do I install BRW PFN?
    Application

Prime non-porous substrates with Xpress SP if needed, peel back the release liner and roll the sheet firmly onto the substrate. Use a hand roller to remove air and ensure full adhesion. Overlap joins by 50mm.

  • What substrates does it stick to?
    Compatibility

Concrete, screed, fibre cement sheet, timber, metals, glazed surfaces, marble, granite, ceramics, plastics, PVC and existing epoxy coatings. Prime smooth/non-porous substrates with Xpress SP.

  • Is it certified for internal and external wet areas?
    Performance

Yes – compliant to AS 4858 (internal wet areas) and AS 4654.1 (external above-ground waterproofing).

  • How soon can I tile over it?
    Cure & Dry Time

BRW PFN is instantly waterproof once adhered – cement-based tile adhesives can be applied directly to the sheet face.

  • How much area does one roll cover?
    Coverage & Coats

Each roll is 1m × 10m = 10 m². Allow extra for 50mm overlaps at joins.

  • Are there fumes or solvents?
    Safety

No – it is cold-applied, solvent free and non-toxic, with no torching or heat welding required.
