Technical overview

Rustblock Rust Converter is a water-based, latex polymer rust treatment that halts corrosion by transforming rust into a stable surface suitable for priming and painting. It reacts with the iron oxides in the metal and converts them into a durable black layer that is more resistant to moisture. It is brushed on in one or two coats at 6.0 m2 per litre for the two coat build, is touch dry in 45 minutes and needs 16 hours to complete the reaction before any finishing coat. It may be left up to 3 months before priming and top coating, and is suitable under most paint systems including latex paints and enamels. No Australian Standard classification and no accredited test report is claimed or published for this product; all figures are the manufacturer's own published data.

Key applications

  • Rusty iron and steel objects
  • Vehicles and trailers
  • Fences and gates
  • Railings and staircases
  • Sheet metal
  • Cast iron
  • Exteriors of tanks
  • Wrought iron and ferrous metal, exterior and interior
  • Preparing rusted steel under latex paints and enamels

Surface suitability

  • Rusted iron and steel (loose rust and contaminants removed with a wire brush or abrasive pad, remaining rust securely adhered)
  • Wrought iron
  • Ferrous metal surfaces, exterior and interior
  • Vehicles and trailers
  • Fences, gates, railings and staircases
  • Sheet metal and cast iron
  • Tank exteriors

Apply only to rusted surfaces. Remove loose rust and surface contaminants first and make sure any remaining rust is securely adhered and the surface is dry and free from dust, grease and oil. Do not apply in high humidity or when the temperature is below 10C or above 30C. Allow 16 hours to dry for a complete reaction before applying any finishing coats, and top coat within 3 months. Always wear gloves and safety glasses. Causes skin irritation, may cause an allergic skin reaction and causes serious eye damage. The Safety Data Sheet classifies the product as Dangerous Goods Class 3 Flammable Liquid, UN 1263, Packing Group III, and a Scheduled Poison S5, so store away from heat and ignition sources. Keep out of reach of children and keep windows and doors open during use and while drying.

Why trade professionals choose Omega

Omega supplies paints and protective coatings to the Australian trade, including the Rustblock range for corroded and bare metal. The line we carry covers the metalwork side of a waterproofing job: rust treatment and anti-corrosive metal priming, plus PoolKote two pack epoxy pool paint for pool shells. It is a small, practical range chosen for the jobs where steel and water meet.
