Technical overview
Key applications
- Bonding ARDEX Weldtec Membranes
- Bonding ARDEX Butynol Membranes
- Bonding ARDEX WPM 116
- Bonding selected ARDEX sheet applied membranes to concrete, screed, brick, CFC sheet and timber
- Large external areas where an extended tack time is needed
- Priming extremely porous substrates when thinned with ARDEX WA 98 Solvent
- Bonding over cured ARDEX WPM 300 HydrEpoxy on damp or green concrete
Surface suitability
- Concrete (mechanically prepared and vacuum cleaned, free of dirt, dust, curing compounds, oils, grease and surface sealers)
- Screed
- Brick
- CFC sheet
- Timber
- Some PVC type (contact ARDEX Technical Services for other substrates)
- Damp or green concrete and masonry above 80% relative humidity (ASTM F2170) or 15g/m2/24hrs (ASTM F1869), primed with two coats of ARDEX WPM 300 HydrEpoxy at 3 m2 per litre per coat and cured a minimum of 24 hours
- Extremely porous substrates (first coat thinned up to 50% with ARDEX WA 98 Solvent, second coat neat)
ARDEX WA 98 Adhesive must be used for external applications only. It is a highly flammable liquid and vapour and must be used only in well ventilated areas: keep away from naked flames, electrical appliances and lights, lighted cigarettes and any other ignition source, and keep the lid tightly on when not in use. It is not to be left UV exposed for long periods of time. High substrate moisture content will negatively affect product adhesion, drying and curing performance, and where concrete or masonry moisture exceeds 80% relative humidity (ASTM F2170) or 15g/m2/24hrs (ASTM F1869), ARDEX WPM 300 HydrEpoxy must be the nominated primer. Embedding the sheet membrane too early may result in solvent entrapment causing sheet membrane bubbling. Applying WA 98 over uncured ARDEX WPM 300 will noticeably damage the WPM 300. Apply only between 10C and 35C. Classified a hazardous chemical and dangerous goods on Poisons Schedule S5: highly flammable liquid and vapour, harmful if swallowed, may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways, causes skin irritation and serious eye irritation, may cause drowsiness or dizziness, suspected of damaging fertility and the unborn child, may cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure, and toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.

Frequently asked questions
-
What is WA 98 used for?
CompatibilityWA 98 is a water-based contact adhesive specifically designed for bonding ARDEX sheet membranes and PVC sheet products to primed substrates. It is not a general-purpose construction adhesive.
-
Does WA 98 need to be applied to both surfaces?
InstallationYes. Apply a thin even coat to both the substrate and the back of the sheet membrane, allow to flash off until tacky, then bond under firm pressure for permanent adhesion.
-
What's the coverage rate?
PerformanceCoverage is approximately 4-8 m² per litre depending on substrate porosity, applied to both bonding surfaces.
-
Is WA 98 solvent-free?
ComplianceYes. WA 98 is water-based with no solvent hazard, making it safe to use in occupied buildings and well-ventilated indoor spaces.
-
Can WA 98 bond non-ARDEX membranes?
CompatibilityWA 98 is engineered specifically for ARDEX sheet membrane systems. For other products, refer to the membrane manufacturer's approved adhesive list.
