Gripset GP General Purpose Primer
Water based 2 in 1 primer and bonding agent for Gripset membranes and tile adhesives.
Gripset GP is a water based multipurpose 2 in 1 primer and bonding agent. As a primer it boosts surface adhesion for Gripset membranes and tile adhesives over porous surfaces. As a bonding agent it improves the strength and water resistance of screeds, renders, mortars and cement based products.
Where to use it
- Concrete, masonry surfaces, renders and screeds
- Concrete blocks and aerated concrete
- Cement sheeting, plaster board and general wet area linings
- Marine plywood and wet area particle board
- Mandatory primer under Gripset membranes, applied neat, do not dilute
Why waterproofers buy it
- Fast drying, membrane can go on after 20 to 30 minutes
- Economical coverage, up to 1 litre per 8m²
- Fully compatible with Gripset membranes, general tile adhesives, renders, mortars and screeds
- Applied by brush, roller or airless spray
- As a bonding agent, improves crack, frost and salt resistance
- Cleans up in water while wet
Coverage
5 litre and 15 litre pails: up to 1 litre per 8m² as a primer, applied neat under Gripset membranes. Coverage may vary due to porosity of substrate.
Not for
Not to be used as primer for areas with rising moisture or negative hydrostatic pressure. Do not use on glass or glazed surfaces. Do not apply over curing compounds, wax or oily surfaces, fibreglass, plastic or silicone treated surfaces. Not to be applied over raw steel or metals unless otherwise specified in the data sheet.

Surface suitability
- Concrete, masonry surfaces, renders and screeds
- Concrete blocks and aerated concrete
- Cement sheeting, plaster board and general wet area linings
- Marine plywood and wet area particle board
- Existing acrylic coatings and Gripset membranes (contact Gripset technical department first for advice on surface preparation and suitability)
- All substrates must be structurally sound, smooth, stable, dry and clean
- Porous surfaces only - check porosity with a water droplet test; if droplets do not absorb the surface is non porous
Check porosity of the surface with a water droplet test; if droplets do not absorb the surface is non porous and a different Gripset primer is required. Although this product is non-hazardous and water based, contents should not be swallowed or inhaled; in case of eye contamination rinse with clean water and seek medical advice. Adhesion of the products to be used should be tested over a typical area of the prepared surface before the application starts.

Frequently asked questions
-
How is Gripset GP applied?
ApplicationApply by brush, roller or low-pressure spray in a single even coat. Ensure the substrate is clean, sound and free of loose material.
-
What's the coverage rate?
Coverage & CoatsAs a membrane primer, apply neat at 1 L per 6 m². As a paint/tile/render bonder, dilute 1:2 with water giving up to 1 L per 8–10 m².
-
How long before I can apply the membrane?
Cure & Dry TimeTouch dry in 20–30 minutes at 23°C / 50% RH. Apply Gripset membranes once the primer film has dried clear.
-
What substrates is it suitable for?
CompatibilityPorous substrates – concrete, concrete block, screed and render, masonry, aerated concrete, compressed fibre cement sheeting and plasterboard.
-
Can I dilute it?
ApplicationYes – for paint, tile or render systems dilute 1 part GP to 2 parts water. Use neat under waterproofing membranes.
-
Is Gripset GP safe to use indoors?
SafetyYes. It is water based, low odour and non-flammable, suitable for use in bathrooms and other enclosed spaces with normal ventilation.
Why trade professionals choose Gripset
Gripset supplies waterproofing membranes, primers, tapes, bond breakers and detailing components to the Australian trade, and the range is used widely on residential and commercial projects. It is built around complete systems, so the primer, the membrane and the detailing accessories are designed to work together on bathrooms, balconies, planter boxes and below-ground areas. We stock Gripset for tilers, waterproofers and builders who would rather buy the whole build-up from one place than mix components across brands.
