Schomburg

Schomburg is a German building chemicals manufacturer whose products are supplied to the Australian trade through specialist waterproofing and flooring suppliers. The range stocked here focuses on two areas: retrofit rising damp treatment under the AQUAFIN name, and substrate preparation using self-levelling compound, engineered screed, repair mortar and tile adhesive. It suits remedial work on existing buildings as much as new construction.

Both are used to form a retrofit horizontal damp proof course in masonry, but they are applied differently. AQUAFIN-F is a ready to use liquid silicification solution, which suits situations where a liquid can be introduced into drilled holes and allowed to work through the wall. AQUAFIN-i380 is a cream supplied in cartridges, so it can be placed accurately without run off and is usually the neater option in occupied buildings or where access is awkward. Read each product's application notes before you specify one over the other.

SOLOPLAN-30 is a self-levelling compound, so it is the choice when you need to correct undulations and finish with a smooth, flat surface ready for tiling or floor coverings. ASO-SEM is an engineered screed, better suited to building up levels, forming falls, or creating a new wearing layer where a levelling compound would be working beyond its intended purpose. As a rule, if the substrate needs genuine build up rather than a skim, go with the screed.

ASOCRET5/40 is a cementitious repair mortar used to reinstate damaged or spalled concrete before a coating, membrane or screed goes over the top. Typical jobs include patching honeycombing, filling blowouts around penetrations, and rebuilding damaged edges and nosings. It is a repair product rather than a levelling product, so if the whole floor is out of tolerance you want a screed or self-leveller instead.

A deformable adhesive is specified where the substrate or the tile is likely to move: large format tiles, heated floors, timber based substrates, and anywhere a membrane sits between the slab and the tile. MONOFLEX-XL is the deformable adhesive in this range and is the sensible default for those conditions. If you are tiling over a waterproofing membrane, confirm adhesive compatibility with the membrane manufacturer as well, since not every membrane accepts every adhesive.

The references most often cited in Australia are AS 3740 for waterproofing of domestic wet areas, AS 4654 for external above ground membranes, and AS 4858 which sets out how wet area membranes are classified and tested. WaterMark certification also comes into play for some products used in plumbing related applications. Which of these apply depends on the product and the application, so check the current technical data sheet and confirm the requirements with your certifier before you commit on a regulated job.
