Butyl sheet membrane for showers and bathrooms. Heat-welded laps, tile or screed 1 hour after install.

ACTFLEX 900R is a heat-weldable butyl rubber sheet membrane for internal wet areas under tiles and screeds. Hot-air welded laps fuse the sheets into one continuous membrane you can probe-test. Factory-made at 0.9 mm, so there is no film build to check.

Where to use it

  • Showers, bathrooms, ensuites and laundries (AS 3740)
  • Under direct-stick tiles, fixed to the fabric face
  • Under bonded screeds: FORSPEC SCREEDX, FORCEM SCREED BINDER or ACTFLEX CRYSTAL BOND
  • Over existing cured screeds primed with ACTFLEX EP250
  • Over electric underfloor heating, cables fully encapsulated in FORSPEC screed or levelling compound

Why waterproofers buy it

  • Complies with AS/NZS 4858. Cyclic movement pass, no fatigue
  • Over 300% elongation. No fillet or bond breaker needed
  • Tile, screed or flood test 1 hour after installation
  • Fabric on both faces. Tiles and screed key to the top, the underside fully bonds with ACTFLEX 302 Adhesive, so no water tracking
  • No open flame. Hot-air welded only
  • Detail with cut strips of the same sheet or ACTFLEX SA TAPE
  • 10 year Forspec product warranty

Coverage

1.4 m x 20 m roll: 28 m² gross, 27.2 m² after the 40 mm welded side lap. Allow approx. 25-26 m² in practice for end laps, upturns, details and wastage.

Not for

External, below-grade or permanently UV-exposed work, or use as a wearing surface. Always cover it with tiles, screed or a similar protective finish. Apply at 5-35°C ambient only. Installation is restricted to applicators with current FORSPEC accreditation.

Technical overview

ACTFLEX 900R is a single-ply, heat-weldable butyl rubber sheet membrane for internal wet areas, with a light grey butyl core faced on both sides with white nonwoven fabric at a factory-controlled 0.9 mm total gauge. The fabric top face keys tile adhesive and bonded screeds directly to the membrane, and the fabric underside keys ACTFLEX 302 Adhesive for a full bond to the substrate, preventing lateral water tracking. Side and end laps are overlapped a minimum of 40 mm and hot-air welded, fusing adjoining sheets into one continuous monolithic membrane with probe-testable seam integrity. No open flame is used. The membrane is ready for tiling, screeding or flood testing 1 hour after installation, with no membrane cure time. It complies with AS/NZS 4858:2004 (R2020), passing cyclic movement with no fatigue exhibited and 56-day immersion durability in deionised water, bleach and detergent, with elongation at break greater than 300%. Membrane and installation details comply with AS 3740:2021. Test reports are available on request from Forspec Protective Coatings. ACTFLEX 900R is internal-only, and installation is restricted to applicators who hold current FORSPEC accreditation for this system.

Key applications

  • Internal wet areas - showers, bathrooms, ensuites and laundries - waterproofed in accordance with AS 3740
  • Beneath direct-stick tiling on the fabric face
  • Beneath bonded screeds using FORSPEC SCREEDX, FORCEM SCREED BINDER or ACTFLEX CRYSTAL BOND
  • Over existing cured screeds, primed with two coats of ACTFLEX EP250
  • Wet areas with electric underfloor heating - cables fully encapsulated in a FORSPEC screed or levelling compound beneath the membrane, never directly against the membrane underside
  • Non-exposed internal transitions into ACTFLEX 906 WPU or ACTFLEX 989 CWP liquid membrane, joined with ACTFLEX SA TAPE

Surface suitability

  • Concrete (structurally sound, installed to the relevant Australian Standard; newly poured concrete cured a minimum of 28 days)
  • Masonry (structurally sound, clean, dry, sharp protrusions and debris removed)
  • Sand/cement screeds (existing cured screeds primed with two coats of ACTFLEX EP250, second coat fully cured before the adhesive)
  • Plywood (bonded with ACTFLEX 302 Adhesive)
  • Fibre cement sheet (lightweight fibre cement sheet flooring: contact FORSPEC Technical Services for current fixing and jointing guidance)
  • Paper-faced plasterboard (bonded with ACTFLEX 302 Adhesive)
  • Any non-standard substrate (contact FORSPEC Technical Services for current fixing and jointing guidance)

Installation is restricted to applicators who hold current FORSPEC accreditation for this system. Internal-only - not suitable for external, below-grade or permanently UV-exposed applications, and not for any transition that will be exposed to open-air UV once finished. Not a wearing surface - it must always sit beneath tiles, screed or a comparable protective finish. Rapid-set or engineered screed products must not be laid directly onto the membrane unless FORSPEC Technical Services has confirmed compatibility. Unbonded screeds must be a minimum of 40 mm thick at any point, reinforced and installed to AS 3958.1, with the mesh laid between screed layers and never directly on the membrane; FORSPEC SCREEDX permits 35 mm at the lowest point, and anything below 35 mm needs written FORSPEC approval. ACTFLEX 302 Adhesive is for internal use only; ACTFLEX 301 ADHESIVE is an approved alternative only in well-ventilated areas, as it is solvent-based. Do not apply either adhesive over any area that will later be heat-welded - welded joints need clean, adhesive-free membrane edges. Apply only at 5-35°C ambient. Underfloor heating cables must never sit directly against the membrane underside. Movement joints and non-standard junctions must be detailed per FORSPEC guidance before covering. Newly poured concrete must be cured a minimum of 28 days, and application constitutes acceptance of the substrate. For lightweight fibre cement sheet flooring or any non-standard substrate, contact FORSPEC Technical Services. The head contractor must make sure other trades know the membrane is in place before any cover goes down. Read the current SDS for the membrane, adhesives, primers and sealants before use.

Frequently asked questions

View all FAQs
  • Do I need to be accredited to install ACTFLEX 900R?
    Application

Yes. Installation is restricted to applicators who hold current FORSPEC accreditation for this system. The 10 year product warranty also needs the membrane installed strictly to the TDS as part of a Forspec approved system.

  • How soon can I tile, screed or flood test?
    Curing

1 hour after installation. There is no membrane cure time. Weld and probe-test every lap and detail first, then flood test to a minimum 50 mm depth at the highest point for 24 hours before any tiling or screeding.

  • How much does one roll cover?
    Coverage

A 1.4 m x 20 m roll is 28 m² gross. After the 40 mm welded side lap it covers 27.2 m². Plan on approx. 25-26 m² in practice once end laps, upturns and details come out, and allow approximately 10% wastage on your take-off.

  • What adhesive do I bond it with?
    Compatibility

ACTFLEX 302 Adhesive, rolled or brushed onto both the substrate and the membrane underside at approx. 8-10 m² per litre per face. ACTFLEX 301 ADHESIVE is an approved alternative, but only in well-ventilated areas because it is solvent-based. Keep adhesive off any area that will later be heat-welded.

  • Can I use it on a balcony or outside?
    Limitations

No. ACTFLEX 900R is internal-only. It is not suitable for external, below-grade or permanently UV-exposed applications. For those jobs, consult FORSPEC for the correct membrane.
