Technical overview

Gripset 38FC is a water based, fast curing, fibre reinforced SBR latex membrane for waterproofing wet areas, showers, laundries, roofs, terraces, balconies, decks and concrete slabs that will be covered over with toppings, tile beds or overlay finishes. The TDS states it is compliant to AS/NZS 4858:2004 and AS4654.1:2012, satisfying the requirements of AS3740:2010 and AS4654.2:2012. Published durability results against AS/NZ 4858 - 2004 include a Class 3 elongation classification at 480%, tensile strength 1.09MPa, and pass results for water, bleach and detergent immersion, heat ageing, cyclic movement and water absorption. The TDS cites no test report number and no accredited certificate is reproduced on the sheet.

Key applications

  • Internal wet areas, bathrooms, laundries and tiled areas
  • Balconies, decks, podiums, terrace floors
  • Roofs to be covered over with screeds and toppings
  • Sandwiching between existing and new concrete substrates
  • Retaining walls
  • Liquid vapour barrier between toppings and slabs
  • General tiled areas to prevent moisture ingress

Surface suitability

  • Concrete, render and masonry (primed with Gripset GP primer)
  • Fibre cement sheeting, plasterboard and structural sheeting (primed)
  • Wet area timber sheeting and external grade plywood (primed)
  • Aerated concrete panels and blocks (primed)
  • Non porous, smooth and dense surfaces (primed with Gripset OP primer)
  • Green or damp concrete, screeds and mineral surfaces containing residual moisture (primed with Xpress Primer H20 Plus)
  • Surfaces with residual moisture or subject to rising damp (primed with Gripset P10 or E60, minimum 24 hours dry)
  • Asphalt, bitumen and existing coatings (Gripset 11Y slurry, membrane applied wet on wet)

Not to be used as a trafficable surface and not to be used as a finished membrane for UV exposed applications. Do not apply to areas when rain is imminent. Do not apply when surface temperature is below 5C or above 30C. Not to be applied over glass or glazed surfaces. Not designed as a sealant for expansion or control joints. Not to be used in areas where solvent or petroleum based products may be spilled. Not to be used in areas subject to negative hydrostatic pressure. All finish coatings over this membrane must be water based and solvent free. Allow minimum 24 hours drying after final application if the treated area is to be flood tested. Pre mixed tile adhesives are not recommended for use over Gripset 38FC.

Frequently asked questions

View all FAQs
  • How many coats and how much do I need?
    Coverage & Coats

Minimum 2 coats at a total minimum coverage of 1.5 L/m² wet, giving a 1mm dry film thickness. A 15L pail covers approximately 10 m².

  • How long before I can tile or flood test?
    Cure & Dry Time

Recoat after 1 hour, tile or apply toppings after 4 hours, flood test after 24 hours (at 23°C / 50% RH). Allow longer in cool or humid conditions.

  • How is it applied?
    Application

Apply by brush, roller or spray. Second coat must run in the opposite direction to the first. Use a wet film gauge to verify coverage.

  • What substrates can I use it on?
    Compatibility

Concrete, render, masonry, compressed fibre cement sheeting, plasterboard, wet area timber sheeting, external grade plywood, aerated concrete panels and blocks. Prime porous substrates with Gripset GP first.

  • Is it certified for wet areas?
    Performance

Yes – compliant to AS 4858 (internal wet areas) and AS 4654.1 (external above-ground waterproofing).

  • Is it safe to use indoors?
    Safety

Yes. It is water based, solvent free, non-toxic and non-flammable, making it suited to confined bathroom and interior spaces.
